The Problem
Cancer survivorship is one of the most underserved phases of a cancer patient's care journey. After active treatment ends, patients are often left navigating follow-up care, side effect management, nutrition, exercise, emotional wellbeing, and integrative therapies largely on their own between appointments.
The CaringHand team needed to address two related challenges. Their pre-visit intake process required gathering detailed diagnosis, treatment history, symptoms, medications, and goals from every new patient before they saw a clinician while remaining warm enough for a population carrying significant medical trauma and anxiety. At the same time, their survivorship patients needed continuous, evidence-based guidance between appointments across nutrition, lifestyle, medical questions, emotional support, and integrative therapy. Expecting individual clinicians to cover that breadth between visits wasn't sustainable, and periodic appointments alone left too many gaps.
“For too many survivors, the end of active treatment is the beginning of being on your own. We built CaringHand because no one should have to navigate survivorship without a plan, a team, and continuous support that meets them where they are, whether that's 2 AM or 2 PM.”

The Solution
Using Amigo's platform, the CaringHand team built Grace, the CaringHand AI agent that supports the broad arc of the cancer survivorship experience. Grace acts as an AI Patient Intake Specialist preparing patients and clinicians for productive consultations and an AI Survivorship Companion offering continuous, evidence-based support to patients between visits.
Safety is especially critical for this population. Cancer survivors may present with severe symptoms, medication reactions, or psychological distress at any point in a conversation. Grace was built with the safety infrastructure to recognize urgent or critical situations and escalate to a human clinician immediately.
Grace, the Patient Intake Specialist
Grace conducts pre-visit intake for new patients over voice or text. She captures details and context in the member's own words, beyond what can be gathered in the medical records. By the time the clinician walks into the appointment, they have a comprehensive clinical summary and record in CaringHand's EMR, so the consultation starts informed rather than from scratch. She integrates directly with CaringHand's internal platform, so appointment booking, availability checks, and clinical notes all happen within the same workflow.
The voice experience reflects the reality of CaringHand's patient population. Responses stay shorter to avoid overwhelming patients who may be anxious or fatigued, pacing adapts to the conversation, and “not sure” is treated as a valid answer for patients who don't have their full clinical details at hand.
Grace, Ongoing Survivorship Support
Through the CaringHand™ Thrive membership, Grace brings each member's Living Action Plan to life for daily use. The goal is to remove friction from accessing trusted guidance, giving people with complex health journeys safe, 24/7 support while staying connected to clinicians who provide the human judgment behind their care.
As a member's situation changes, so does their plan. Grace maintains context on each member across conversations, from cancer type and stage to medications and goals, and grounds her responses in legitimate medical sources, which she shares as URLs. Whether a member needs help managing fatigue after chemotherapy, working through anxiety about recurrence, or understanding which integrative therapies, such as diet, nutrition, sleep, and exercise approaches, are clinically supported, Grace meets them with personalized guidance grounded in their Living Action Plan.
“What we needed was an AI agent that could give survivors trusted support without time constraints, available when they need it, grounded in evidence, and always linked back to our clinical team. Amigo gave us the infrastructure to test thousands of interactions and refine every nuance, the pacing, the safety, the clinical rigor.”

The Results
CaringHand's clinical team has reported saving over 80% of the time previously spent on manual intake, freeing clinicians to focus on what matters most—the care and support of their members. Members have been able to onboard in the middle of the night or at any point that's convenient for them, significantly cutting the cycle time from onboarding to delivery of insights from days to hours, which is invaluable to members and their families.
“Amigo understood that survivors need a companion that's both evidence-based and deeply empathetic,” said Dr. Barr. “Grace brings together oncology expertise across multiple clinical domains into a single experience that meets patients where they are in their survivorship journey.”
